Hilliard
Although some towns are made by the railroad, some by oil, and yet others by shipping, the town of Hilliard was built by lumber. Without lumber, the town would never have existed. The town's namesake, Civil War Captain Guyler Walter Hilliard, did much to to advance industries and opportunities in south Georgia and this led to the advancement of Hilliard. It all started when he ran low on wood in the Waycross area and moved his milling operation near the S.F. &W. Railroad and established the town of Hilliard in 1881. The Hilliard Methodist Church was the first building to go up followed shortly by a two-room public school house. The school, after 100 years, is still standing. By 1884, the population of Hilliard had grown to 150 people and continues to grow today.
